Our local guide shows us the maze of winding streets and a cathedral guide shows us the wonders of Canterbury Cathedral, the head seat of the Church of England since 597. Day 4 Stonehenge – Salisbury – Winchester

Leaving London we travel southwest and stop at the mysterious stone circle of Stonehenge before spending time in the cathedral city of Salisbury. Built in 1258 the medieval cathedral is one of the finest in England and houses one of the Magna Cartas. Written in 1215 this book is even older than the cathedral itself. In the afternoon we continue to Winchester where we visit the 11th Century Cathedral. The Cathedral contains many tombs, some from the 12th Century, along with more "modern" examples such as those of Jane Austen and T E Lawrence.

Day 5 Bath

A drive through the pleasant countryside of Wiltshire brings us to the unique World Heritage Site of Bath. We visit Bath Abbey, sometimes called the Lantern of the West because of its enormous clear glass windows. Visit also the Roman Baths and Pump Room, Pulteney Bridge and The Royal Crescent.

Overnight Stratford-upon-Avon

Day 6 Coventry – Stratford-upon-Avon

Begin the day with a visit to the city of Coventry where, on the evening of 14 November 1940 bombs and fire destroyed the city. Today, the charred ruins of the old Cathedral sit next to its exciting modern replacement. In the afternoon we return to Stratford-upon-Avon to visit the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the Elizabethan home of Anne Hathaway. Transfers and tickets to a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company can be arranged for this evening.

Day 8 Durham

A short journey north brings us to the historic city of Durham. The city, perched high on a peninsula above the River Wear, is one of the most stunning in Europe. The cathedral can trace its history back over 1000 years and is the final resting place of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. We return to the city of York with free time, perhaps to explore the Richard III Museum in the Monk Bar Tower, walk the well-preserved city walls or visit the excellent York Castle Museum.
