Riga Old Town
Baltic Capitals... Tallinn and Riga
On the shores of the Baltic Sea, Riga and Tallinn are both UNESCO World Heritage cities. Both were important members of the sea trading Hanseatic League which was created to protect economic interests along the trade routes frequented by merchants. Riga's Old Town boasts a legacy of Gothic, Baroque and Classical architecture, while the New Town has one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. Tallinn is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe and its web of winding cobblestone streets dates back to the 11th century. It also contains some fascinating Cold War attractions such as the KGB museum in Hotel Viru.
