Across Granish Moor
Great Highland Railways
Michael Portillo's "Great Railway Journeys" television series has rekindled our romance with railway journeys and this tour will not disappoint. Our railway adventure includes scenery in areas of Scotland that are dramatic in different ways. Many memorable experiences and views will be created from the breathtakingly beautiful Kyle Line to Kyle of Lochalsh, to the Far North Line to Thurso, on the most northerly shoreline.
Inverness • Strathspey Railway • Thurso • Eastern Coastline • Kyle of Lochalsh
Day 1 Travel to the overnight stop in the Glasgow area.
Day 2 Continue north to the Highlands to reach Aviemore and enjoy a ride on the nostalgic Strathspey Railway to Broomhill. Continue to Inverness, the "city in the Highlands", for time at leisure before proceeding to the hotel.
Day 3 Todays rail journey is on the Far North Line, the northern most railway in the United Kingdom. Experience the dramatic scenery as you travel along the eastern coastline, which at times runs almost on the shore, then turn inland across the wilderness of the moors to Thurso. Enjoy some time in this remote Georgian town before returning to the hotel by coach.
Day 4 The highlight for most will be todays journey on one of the worlds finest coast-to-coast railway journeys to the Kyle of Lochalsh, overlooking the Isle of Skye. This spectacular train ride is undoubtedly one of the most scenic rail journeys in the United Kingdom. Rejoin the coach for an equally interesting return tour via Loch Ness.
Day 5 Journey south with a recommended stop in Pitlochry, where we can arrange a distillery tour if required. Alternatively and if time permits, we can arrange a trip on the Funicular Railway to the top of the Cairn Gorm to experience some of the most spectacular views in Scotland looking across the famous mountainous landscape which epitomises this beautiful country. Overnight stop in the Glasgow area.
Day 6 Homeward journey.
