Lille Grand Place

Lille Grand Place

Lille and Flanders

Lille is a city of surprises. Dating from before 1066 it has been under Flemish and Spanish control before becoming French in 1667 during the conquest of the city by Louis XIV. It sits close to the border of Belgium and there is lots to discover around the streets and squares of the city centre.

Historic Lille • Arras • Ypres and the Menin Gate

Day 1 Short Channel crossing with a suggested stop in the historic town of St Omer en-route to Lille for a 3 night stay.

Day 2 Start the morning with a guided walk of Old Lille. See the Palais Rihour, the Main Square, the old stock exchange, the Opera House, the Chamber of Commerce and Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral. The afternoon and evening are free to explore and to sample some Flemish delights in one of the many fine restaurants close to the hotel.

Day 3 A day in Arras. Largely destoyed during the Great War, Arras was painstakingly reconstructed and today boasts some of the grandest squares and archtecture in Northern Europe. We include a guide for a walking tour of the city centre.

Day 4 Cross the border into Belgium and visit Ypres, a thriving market town that was devastated during some of the bloodiest battles of 1917 and 1918. In the afternoon return to the Channel for a crossing home.
