Palace of Communications, Madrid
Madrid, Art and Palaces
In the heart of Spain, high on a plateau stands Madrid, a city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. It's renowned for its rich repositories of European art boasting some the greatest museums in the world. It became Spain's capital when Philip II moved the royal court there from Valladolid. Crossing La Mancha plains, the area that inspired the book 'Don Quixote', this tour includes a visit to Toledo, with its superb gateways and cathedral.
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum • Royal Palace • Toledo • El Museo Nacional del Prado
Day 1 Fly from the UK to Madrid and transfer to the hotel
Day 2 Morning visit to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. This art inspired family put together a comprehensive collection which is presented in chronological order and, together with the Prado Museum, is one of Madrid's finest. Afternoon visit to the Royal Palace which has over 3,400 rooms, many containing works of art including paintings by Goya, Velazquez and Caravaggio.
Day 3 Full day visit to Toledo, on the banks of the Tagus. Two millennia of history are contained within its walls. Of importance to the Romans and once capital of the Visigoth kingdom, in the Middle Ages Toledo became a symbol of religious tolerance where followers of the 3 main religions coexisted peacefully. Take a guided walking tour through the historic centre of the city and visit the Museo del Greco.
Day 4 A day for independent sightseeing in Madrid. A 'must see' is the Prado Museum, Spain's most celebrated gallery, created with the double aim of showing the works of art that belonged to the Spanish Crown and demonstrating to the rest of Europe that Spanish art was the envy of any nation. On foot one can savour the atmosphere and elegance of the main attractions of this cosmopolitan city. Art lovers may choose to continue exploring The Prado Museum; perhaps visit one of the other galleries; the 20th Century collections at El Museo Reina Sofía or the Lazaro Galdiano Foundation, also one of the most prestigious museums in the world, and admire works by Goya, El Bosco, El Greco, Murillo and Zurbaran.
Day 5 Transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK.
