The Prado, Madrid
Madrid, Toledo and Salamanca
In the heart of Spain, high on a plateau stands Madrid, boasting some the greatest museums in the world and surrounded by historic cities such as Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca and Ávila. Madrid, where our tour begins, became the capital when Philip II moved the royal court there from Toledo. Crossing La Mancha plains, the area that inspired the book 'Don Quixote', we visit Toledo, with its superb gateways and cathedral. We continue to the monastery at Escorial, the medieval walled town of Ávila and then the beautiful city and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salamanca, famous for the Casa de las Conchas and its 12th century university which is the oldest in Europe.
