An exciting tour starting and finishing in Romania's capital, Bucharest, a city of avenues, parks and museums. In the 1930s its 'fin de siecle' architecture earned it the nickname of 'Little Paris'. Transylvania is home to some of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns, stunning castles and fortified Saxon churches. Colourful centuries-old traditions still thrive in the villages and are delightfully apparent in the folk costumes, architecture, cuisine and music of the region.

Day 1 Fly to Bucharest and transfer to hotel. Afternoon walking tour of the city.

Day 2 Morning, panoramic tour of Bucharest with a stop at the cathedral, then on to Curtea de Arges, former capital of Wallachia to visit the Episcopal Church where the Romanian Kings are buried. Lunch en route. Drive along the picturesque Olt Valley to Cozia Monastery and Sibiu, one of the oldest towns in Transylvania.

Day 3 Morning drive to the heart of Transylvania to visit the secret retreat of European royalty. The unspoilt Saxon villages are like a remarkable trip back in time. See Sighisoara, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler ('Dracula') and visit the medieval citadel.

Day 4 Continue to Târgu Mures and visit the elegant city centre well known for its architecture. On to Bistrita, one of the 7 medieval towns of Transylvania.

Day 5 Full day in Bucovina. Visit the Moldovita and Sucevita monasteries with outside frescoes. Lunch en route, then visit the famous monastery of Voronet, 'the Sistine Chapel of the East' and then south to the Agapia monastery.

Day 6 Across the mountains to Brasov through the spectacular Bicaz Gorges, the Red Lake, Miercurea Ciuc with lunch en route. Visit the beautiful Prejmer church.

Day 7 Guided walking tour in the historic centre of Brasov including a visit to the Black Church. Then on to Bran for a visit to 'Dracula's Castle' Lunch and a visit to Sinaia Monastery and the fabulous Peles Castle. On to Bucharest and the outdoor Village Museum. Farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant.

Day 8 In the morning free time in central Bucharest for visits and shopping and transfer to the airport.
