This two centre tour starts in the stylish region of Tuscany with its idyllic countryside and world class art and architecture, based in the elegant thermal spa town of Montecatini Terme. Liguria, with its turquoise coves backed by tree lined cliffs and the aroma of pine, includes the five fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, stylish Portofino and our base Santa Margherita Ligure.
Leaning Tower of Pisa • Florence • Lucca • Portofino • Genoa • Cinque Terre
Day 1 Fly to Pisa where you are met by your guide. Visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Campo dei Miracoli - Duomo and the Baptistry on a half day walking tour.
Day 2 A full day to Florence, easily reached either by coach or train from Montecatini. Including a half day guided tour which includes the Galleria dell'Accademia as well as admissions to the Duomo, Brunelleschi's Dome, Giotto's Bell Tower, San Giovanni Baptistry and the Santa Reparata Crypt.
Day 3 A morning at leisure to explore Montecatini with its shops and cafes, thermal baths and gardens. Montecatini Alto, a wonderful Tuscan hilltop town, is accessible by funicular. Continue to the wonderful town of Lucca, birthplace of Puccini, with its 16th Century walls and narrow medieval streets for a guided walking tour.
Day 4 Transfer by coach to Santa Margherita Ligure for the next 3 nights. An afternoon boat trip to Portofino arrives directly into the picturesque port. Take time at leisure in this most scenic and charming of Italian towns, or maybe while away the time at a waterside bar.
Day 5 Travel to Genoa for a guided tour of the city's fascinating historic centre. Highlights include the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black-and-white-striped facade and frescoed interior; narrow lanes opening onto monumental squares like Piazza de Ferrari, site of an iconic bronze fountain and the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house. The tour includes panoramic and walking elements and an afternoon tour of the Musei di Strada Nuova.
Day 6 Travel by train to Monterosso-al-Mare, the northernmost in the Cinque Terre chain of villages. From here take a guided boat trip of the Cinque Terre, a string of ancient fishing villages along the dramatic coastline. Painted houses and gnarled vines cling to steep terraces, trattorias serve seafood specialties with the region's famous sauce, pesto.
Day 7 Time at leisure before transferring to Genoa airport for the return flight to the UK.
