Norway's Fjordland

This new tour travels further northwards in Norway, into the magnificent fjords region, and truly highlights one the most scenic areas in Europe. With dramatic mountains, crystal waters and pretty villages to explore along the way, the touring possibilities are wonderful and showcase the country at its very best. Highlights include unspoilt scenery, stave churches and glaciers, as well as hotels with enviable locations on the water’s edge.

Day 1 Short Channel crossing. Overnight in Holland.

Day 2 Travel across Germany and into Denmark for dinner and an overnight stay near Kolding.

Day 3 Travel to Hirtshals to board a fast-craft for the exciting journey across the Skagerrak Sea to Norway. Leave the port and enjoy fantastic scenery en-route to Hamar, on the shore of Lake Mjøsa, for an overnight stay. A short de-tour into Oslo enroute is possible.

Day 4 After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely drive past rivers and lakes northwards. Traversing through spectacular valleys, arrive at the tranquil Loenfjord for a 2 night stay.

Day 5 Enjoy a full day in Loen. Take a leisurely walk along the water’s edge, taking in the breathtaking views. Alternatively, just outside the village there is the Loen Skylift cable car with magnificent views across the mountain tops and down to the beautiful fjords. Alternatively, relax at the hotel enjoying a drink on the hotel’s terrace.

Day 6 Depart southwards through the mountains, through the village of Skei and make a stop at Fjærland for a visit to the Norwegian Glacier Museum. Continue to the bustling town of Sogndal and follow the fjord to Balestrand for a 4 night stay.

Day 7 Take the ferry from Hella to Vagnes and stop for a photo of the Hopperstad Stave Church. Continue over the Vik Mountains and on to Gudvangen and an included visit to the Viking Village. Travel past Flåm and on through the Lærdal Tunnel, the longest in the world. A visit to the Salmon Centre in Lærdal is recommended. 

Day 8 Travel the short journey across the fjord to the vibrant town of Sogndal for a little free time before continuing to Kaupanger to visit the Sogn Folk Museum. This interesting site tells the history of fjordland life through farm dwellings and exhibitions. 

Day 9 Enjoy a full day at leisure in Balestrand. Within the village there is a cider producer who offers tours and tasting, the pretty English Church, a Viking mound and fascinating ‘dragon houses’ built by artists at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Alternatively, the hotel offers lounges and a terrace to relax and enjoy the views.

Day 10 Depart Balestrand, taking the short ferry crossing southwards, making a photo stop at the stunning Borgund Stave Church enroute. Continue through the impressive Hemsedal Valley, before arriving at the overnight stay in Horten and dinner.  

Day 11 Take the early morning fast-craft ferry crossing to Denmark, and travel on to the Hamburg area for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 12 Travel through Germany, into Holland and on to the North Sea coast for a relaxing overnight crossing to Hull or Harwich.

Day 13 Arrive back in the UK and travel home.

With a breathtaking location on the shore of the Sognefjord, Kviknes combines traditional hospitality and modern comforts.
