Great Highland Railways

Michael Portillo's 'Great Railway Journeys' television series has rekindled our romance with railway journeys. Our railway adventure includes scenery in areas of Scotland that are dramatic in different ways. Many memorable experiences will be created from the breathtakingly beautiful Kyle Line to Kyle of Lochalsh, to the Far North Line to Thurso, on the most northerly shoreline.

Inverness • Beauly • Strathspey Railway • Thurso • Eastern Coastline • Kyle of Lochalsh

Day 1 Travel north for an overnight in the Lockerbie area.

Day 2 Continue north to the Highlands with stops in Aviemore or Inverness before proceeding to the hotel.

Day 3 An early start today for the scenic journey to the remote Georgian town of Thurso. Following time at leisure, enjoy today's rail journey on the Far North Line, the northern most railway in the United Kingdom. Experience the wilderness of the moors before the dramatic scenery as you travel along the eastern coastline, which at times runs almost on the shore.

Day 4 The highlight for most will be today's journey on one of the world's finest coast-to-coast railway journeys to the Kyle of Lochalsh, overlooking the Isle of Skye. This spectacular train ride is undoubtedly one of the most scenic rail journeys in the United Kingdom. Rejoin the coach for an equally impressive return via Loch Ness.

Day 5 To Aviemore and Rothiemurchus Estate this morning. We will be joined by a ranger to accompany us on a coach safari to get the best views of the surrounding countryside and the chance to meet the resident deer and Highland Cows. Afterwards, enjoy a nostalgic ride on the Strathspey Railway to Broomhill.

Day 6 Journeying south, break the journey at Loch Tummel and the panoramic 'Queens View' before spending time in Pitlochry. Onwards then to your overnight hotel in the Lockerbie area.

Day 7 Homeward journey.
